Wet, windy and cobbles.
Full field of 162 riders including a hand full of Conti teams) and a few names some may recognise: Tijmen Eising and in previous years Wilco Kelderman, Lars van der Haar, Nick van der Lijke and Brian van Goethem.
This was always going to be a big experience for our boys.
Our team taking the start was:
Peter Merritt (coming in last minute for Alex Ashman who was ill.)
Matthew Hanford reporting his few of the race.
"On Sunday myself and the team travelled to Holland to race the infamous Wim Hendriks Trofee. We were all prepared to race what could possibly be the hardest race of our season and by far the hardest race I’ve ever done. We got to the start line before all the other teams and ended up at the front, in a great position from the onset. It started a bit like a CX race, neutralised for about 30 meters, then full gas. After 20 hectic minutes the race started to settle, after losing a few positions I decided to move up before the first cobble sector. I hit the cobble sector hard and gained lots of places and found Peter, who guided me through the group for most of the race. I managed to get round all the big laps which was my main objective, but unfortunately got caught behind a little crash during the second lap of finishing circuit and I just didn’t have the legs to get back to the main bunch! I then got pulled out by the broom wagon with 1.5 laps to go, which was such a disappointment. However I am mega happy with how I performed on the day and the team were amazing. There was awesome banter all weekend, which gave everyone good spirit's going into the race. A big thanks to everyone behind the scenes who made it as easy as possible for the team and a massive thanks to the sponsors for making this happen for us!"
The team had it's up's and down's on the day unfortunately no one made it to the finish, we will be back again next year.
