Tour of Sussex Stage 1

Tour Of Sussex stage 1 - crit on the sea front - 4th July...

Stage 1 was the crit on the sea front. With a hotdog shaped circuit with two 180 degree turns, the trick was to ride near the front for the entire race. With bonus seconds on offer for the first rider across the line on lap one, it was going to be full on from the gun! Following the riders briefing at 7pm, the team rolled straight to the start line but unfortunately did not manage to get as close to the line as they wanted to be.

At 7:30 the race started and it was a sprint off the line into the first corner. The race strung out with riders fighting for the best line. The team worked hard to move up through the Peleton to get closer to the front. After about 30 minutes, gaps started to appear in the peleton, fracturing under the stress applied from those at the front chasing points. Two riders managed to gap the bunch and hold a 10-15 second gap and the bunch were not fully committed to chasing.

When the bunch sat up, Peter took the opportunity well and rode off the front, giving him the pick of the line going into the corners. Another rider bridged across and they maintained a 7-9 second gap between the peleton and the leaders until the last lap when they were unfortunately caught by the bunch leading up to the sprint.

Well done to the team, going into stage two with Peter 8th on the day and on GC.
