Farnham town centre crit - Sunday 7th July - E/1/2 - 3rd Place - Kieran Hotson reporting:
Another race in my town centre campaign in the bag and probably the furthest one away from me to get to. Thanks very much to team mate Josh Copley for letting me stay over for the race.
Arriving at the race and having a walk round the course I quickly realised this was going to be a lively race for sure. A very rough surfaced course with 6 corners over the 1km circuit, with a scary trench like pothole right on the apex of the first corner that claimed the egos of a few names on the night. The rest of the course wasn't too bad but just technical with a tight chicane on the run in to the finish suited a smaller nimble rider like myself to flick through those turns faster. Even still it was essential to get a good start so I managed to get a second row start on the grid and get away fast to avoid most of the early carnage.
The opening laps were flat out with a few riders going up the road then coming back and bodies everywhere trying to move up. I managed to hold my own in about 10th wheel for most of the race with little opportunity to move up once the race had lined out into its rhythm and hardly any change to the running order until the last 10 minutes of the race. I felt the bunch ease up slightly on the open back straight, so I sensed it was the only chance to push up so I swiftly pushed into 3rd place as we entered the last 5 laps.
I then helped contribute to the pace making as we swept up the lone leader of the race with 4 laps to go still staying in the top 3. As we hit the final lap I defended my position in 3rd through the back straights avoiding being dive bombed and then trying to push up again on the last straight before the sprint. In the end I couldn't pass the other two riders so had to settle for 3rd but was more than happy with the result of my first National B podium.
