Hillingdon Crit West Thames Rnd #13 - 9th July - Dave Williams reporting -
A perfect night for racing with really light winds a big field of quality riders and the circuit run clockwise...
Whilst warming up I could feel almost immediately I had good legs and the strength to have a strong race. After last weeks win at Cyclopark I needed a good race with a top 6 position to get my 2nd CAT licence.
It was fast from the whistle and to be honest I just started attacking the race from lap 2 gaining a substantial gap on the field. No one joined me so eventually the fresh legs of the field caught me after a few solo laps away! There were larger than usual numbers behind some of the other teams this week which meant no sooner did one rider get brought back another rider attack over the top - it was great racing and I was able to not only stick with it but continue to attack the race myself whilst also contribute to pulling other riders back! We kept the pace high and going into the last 3 laps it got really scrappy with everyone fighting to be near the head of the race. It did get a little close for comfort to say the least with less experienced riders touching wheels and leaning on other riders but all in all I held my line and used my experience to stay as near to the edge so not to get tangled in their mess! On the last lap there was a huge attack from one rider who manage to stay away and take the win. On the flip side on the final corner I got pinned to the far edge behind a rider coming back through the bunch which I couldn’t push around without switching and potentially collecting riders to the side of me - unfortunately this really hampered my sprint and I ended up finishing somewhere inside the top 20. I was gutted with the end result having felt so strong and ultimately having had such a good race but then there is always next week!
