Matthew Hanford in Belgium

27STE GP BURGEMEESTER LUC DE RYCK - 13th August - Matthew Hanford reporting:

This being my first ever Kermesse, I didn’t have much to expect other than hard racing. It was a small field of only around 50-60 riders with GB U23 having a team in the race too. The race kicked off and strung out straight away, kicking hard through every corner. I was too keen and started attacking a lot for the first hour trying to get away, but the peloton was only giving attacks about 100m before pulling us back. I then decided to sit back in the group as I started to suffer. Going into the last 45min of the race the main attacks started to come in and I had nothing left. A silly mistake of not sprinting to get back on the back meant that I was distanced and just couldn’t get on again. Race over. Pretty gutted but happy with how I raced and I learnt a lot to take into the next one.
