DAP CC Spring Road Race - Peter Merritt reporting

On Sunday, I made the trek up to Suffolk for the DAP CC Spring Road Race. The course was flat and
exposed, and conditions were very windy. About 20 miles into the race, with a 9-man breakaway
already up the road, I got into a counter-move with 10 other riders and after an arduous 2 laps of
through-and-off we bridged across to them, making it a 20-man breakaway. Despite a healthy lead
over the peloton, the group wasn’t working together well and riders started attacking so as to
downsize into a smaller (and more effective) leading group. The first successful move was formed of
2 riders after 4 laps to go. Once we’d passed the finish line with 3 laps to go, the rest of the
breakaway split into 2 groups and I unfortunately found myself in the second group. With 2 laps to
go, the group I was in got caught by the peloton. Shortly after this, the peloton itself splintered into a
number of groups. I tried to be well-positioned, but my earlier efforts in the race didn’t give me
many more matches to burn. I came to the finish with a small group of riders for 28th place. A
disappointing end to what could have been a good result. Plenty to learn from and improve upon for
the next race.
