Icknield RC

Icknield RC Great Barford Road Race - 26th May - Peter Merritt reporting:

On 26th May, I made the journey up to Bedfordshire to compete in the Icknield RC Great Barford Road Race. I was fairly apprehensive about my chances of a respectable result after a bout of tendinitis that had been affecting me in the build up to this race. The course was a circuit just under 16km in distance that we were to complete 9 times for a total of 140km (87 miles). It was predominantly flat with a couple of drags and one small climb. There were many exposed areas on the course also which were to prove particularly challenging given the extremely windy conditions on the day. The race was extremely active from the very start. Once we were out of the neutral zone, those at the front immediately tried splitting the peloton. The effects of this were felt most in the crosswind sections that just so happened to be on the least sheltered parts of the course. For the majority of the race, there was no breakaway. Due to the gale like conditions, it became less a game of tactics, and more a war of attrition. After more than 2 hours, a group of 7 finally got clear. Unfortunately, the complications faced in the week leading up to this had taken their toll, and in the final laps I could do no more than hang on to the depleted bunch. Unsurprisingly, I had nothing in the legs for the sprint, and I rolled over the finish line at the back of the peloton for 33rd place. Not what I'd hoped for, but with only 36 riders actually finishing the race, it was better to have a 'get round' than nothing at all. I'll now be focusing on recovering from the tendinitis and getting back on the bike as soon as possible.
