Hillingdon Crit West Thames Rnd #7 - 28th May - Dave Williams reporting
With the circuit run clockwise tonight and very light winds, it was going to make for a fast race... I had felt strong warming up so decided to take the race on from the outset, following attacks as they happened, creating breaks and staying largely at the front of the race with relative ease! It was clear to see that nothing was going to stick as even when I formed breaks with riders from the larger represented teams, their own team mates were even chasing each other down to bring the break back!
In the end I just followed the wheels at the head of the race and attacked to keep the pace high when there was a lull - With 3 laps to go I stayed within the top 6 and made sure that I didn’t get boxed in like in other weeks... On the last lap coming past the club house, I jumped on a rider carrying good speed to the front of the race and then upon getting to the corner before the finishing straight I hit the front myself and wound it up to my absolute max, hoping I could hold on to the line - unfortunately within the last 5 to 10 meters, two guys came around the side of me and we all lined up within half a wheel of each other to lunge over the line. I came away with 3rd place, which although wasn’t the win it could have been, I can take confidence away from the race that my form is still building and it’s a few more BC points in the bag!
